Heathwood is a small home situated in a quiet residential area close to Weston town centre in an attractive and spacious Hans Price designed building.
We have decorated Heathwood in a sympathetic and traditional homely manner, with very spacious communal living areas all linked, providing easy observation which aids risk management.
Although registered for 20, the home currently provides residential care for 19 residents in single rooms although we can cater for family members in a large twin room if required. All rooms are individual in size and decoration and enjoy ensuite facilities some with bath and shower (with only one exception). There are two suites which are rarely available due to popular demand. All bedrooms are provided without locks to give ease of access whenever residents wish.
In addition to resident private facilities, there are assisted bathrooms on every level. Picture signage on key areas is provided to assist with orientation.
A corridor with additional communal space at the end helps relieve agitation for those who need to wander. Residents are not encouraged to use the stairs unless necessary to reduce the risk of falling. Stair lifts are available for access.
The provision of easily accessible garden space is essential when providing quality dementia care.
In warmer weather the back door which leads to the secure back garden is left open to encourage residents to wander freely but in a supervised environment.
In addition we are currently constructing a secure front garden which is due to be open from October 2006 and will allow freedom for all residents during the day.
Residents enjoy three superb and nutritionally balanced meals a day as well as a late supper of hot milky drinks and assorted sandwiches. Additional food is always available when required. All food is prepared by our long standing and award winning catering staff. Food is prepared from scratch with fresh fruit and vegetables and meat as a standard ingredient. Both the care and catering staff work hard to ensure that the nutritional needs of every resident are assessed and reviewed on a regular basis.
Our catering staff have every right to be proud of their work and they are commended by the CSCI in our inspection report.
Security and safety is paramount at Heathwood. All external doors are secured with electronic keypads to provide a safe environment and to discourage residents from attempting to leave the building without the support needed from staff. All exits are linked to the fire alarm in the event of emergency.
Provision of activities
We acknowledge the importance of structured activities for people with dementia who are unable to pursue their own hobbies and interests. Activities provide a welcome break from feelings of isolation and despair that many people with early stages of dementia experience.
Heathwood has a full activity programme involving both outside entertainers and internal staff.
A qualified hairdresser visits weekly basis and all residents enjoy the use of our hairdressing area. We have a chiropodist who visits every six weeks.
The home has the benefit of a mini bus fitted with wheelchair access which is used regularly for outings local garden centres, cafes or pubs and are often driven around the bay and stroll along the sea front when the weather is warm enough.
